All About RUF Wood Briquettes: Production, Quality and Benefits Heating with Wood – Efficient and Sustainable
As energy prices for oil and gas continue to rise, wood has regained its importance as an energy source. It is locally available, cost-stable, and environmentally friendly. One of the most efficient ways to use wood energy is in the form of briquettes – such as RUF wood briquettes.
How Are RUF Wood Briquettes Made?
RUF briquettes are made from dry wood chips or sawdust – entirely without any binders. High hydraulic pressure liquefies the natural lignin found in wood, which then acts as a binding agent and forms the briquette’s solid shape.
Typical Characteristics:
- Dimensions: approx. 155 × 65 × 100 mm
- Density: approx. 1.0 kg/dm³ (depending on material)
- Energy content: approx. 5.0 kWh/kg
Thanks to their high density and uniform size, RUF briquettes burn slowly and evenly, providing long-lasting heat.
Producing quality briquettes requires the right technology. Our wood briquetting machines are specially designed for compacting wood residues into high-density, ready-to-sell briquettes.
Advantages of RUF briquetting systems:
- Compact design – fits into existing production environments
- Plug & Press – fast installation and commissioning
- Low maintenance – engineered for efficiency and uptime
- Fully automated 24/7 operation
- Extremely durable – built for long-term industrial use
What Defines High-Quality Briquettes?
Various wood-based materials can be used for briquetting – from fine sawdust to coarse wood chips. The crucial factor is a residual moisture content below 12%. Quality standards such as DIN 51731 or Ö-Norm M7135 help ensure consistent product quality. Certified briquettes are tested to meet these standards.
RUF briquettes offer significant advantages over traditional wood fuels – both economically and environmentally:
Key Benefits of RUF Wood Briquettes
- Increased revenue from a marketable end product
- No additives required – pressed using natural lignin only
- CO₂-neutral fuel – sustainable and climate-friendly
- Higher energy content than firewood
- Space-saving storage thanks to rectangular shape
Briquettes vs. Firewood: A Comparison
Compared to logs, RUF briquettes provide a higher energy yield in a more compact form. For example:
- 1 ton of RUF briquettes ≈ 5,000 kWh of energy
- ≈ 1.24 t of softwood or 1.30 t of hardwood
- ≈ 4.6 stacked cubic meters (Ster) of softwood
- ≈ 3.25 Ster of hardwood
They are also easier to stack and store, saving valuable space.
Note:
RUF Maschinenbau does not produce briquettes itself. We are specialized in designing and manufacturing the briquetting systems that enable efficient briquette production.
