Recycling becomes even more profitable through briquetting

Ruf Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG, Zaisertshofen, with the RUF 5,5/2400/60x60 are presenting a briquetting system at Euroguss 2022 (Hall 7, Stand 7-224) which is perfectly suited to pressing aluminium.

Euroguss 2022, the leading specialist trade fair for process technology concerned with die casting, represents the complete lifecycle of metals such as aluminium, magnesium and zinc. This begins with melting, continues with casting and metal processing, and ends with recycling, which is basically re-melting.

Refiners and foundries also receive the raw materials required for the latter step as loose chips, which are produced during machining. The problem here is the high volume and the high moisture content in the chip from cooling lubricants, with average values of 10 to 15 percent or even higher proportions.

The use of high-quality briquetting systems, as demonstrated by Ruf with the RUF 5.5/2400/60x60 at Euroguss 2022, solves these problems. This is because the residual moisture can be reduced to three to five percent for aluminium, for example, and below 3 percent for systems with higher pressure. At the same time, the volume of the chips is reduced by a factor of 1:5 to 1:10. This simplifies handling enormously.

In many cases, briquettes also have an advantage when melting: the briquettes are largely or even completely submerged in the liquid metal. This reduces the burn-off/melting loss and increases the metal yield.

The RUF 5.5/2400/60x60 exhibited in Nuremberg is one of the smaller briquetting systems from Ruf Maschinenbau. It has a motor output of 5.5 kW and produces rectangular briquettes in the format 60x60 mm with a specific pressing pressure of 2400 kg/cm². The throughput of this system varies depending on the type and nature of the chips and is up to 120 kg/h for aluminium.
